Brockworth’s Cheese-Rolling Races

”Since the early 1800s, there has been an unusual competition in the town of Brockworth in England. It's called a cheese-rolling race and it can be a very risky activity. Someone rolls a very large wheel of cheese down a steep hill and then runners try to catch it. Whoever gets to the base of the hill first gets the cheese. The hill has a 45° slope, which is very steep. This often makes runners go faster than they really want to. People who worry about their own safety don't run in this race. Sometimes runners are injured because they run too quickly and fall over. Some competitors do not worry about the danger and run this race every year. I think the danger is actually one of the reasons the runners enjoy the race.

The cheese races held at Brockworth in England each year are a lot of fun. At these races, someone pushes a very large cheese down a steep hill and runners try to catch it. The competitors really want to win one of the cheeses. The hill where the races are held is very steep, but the runners don't seem to mind. It just makes them go faster. Both spectators and runners seem to be having a good time. Everyone is laughing and smiling. Some people say the runners are crazy, and I must say I agree. The crowd cheers, 'Go! Go! Go!' and this makes the competitors run even faster. They sometimes run so fast that they fall over and get hurt. In fact five years ago, thirty spectators were injured when a cheese rolled into the crowd. But that didn't stop people from coming back the next year. The races are just too much fun!”
